There are a number of key things to consider when choosing the most appropriate manhole bedding mortar.

Timescales

Depending on the application and circumstances of the project you are working on can choose;

30 minute mortar, reaching 20 MPa within 30 minutes

60 minute mortar, reach 20 MPa after 60 minutes

90 minutes mortar, reaching 20 MPa after 90 minutes

Shelf Life

It's important to select a bedding mortar which has a minimum of a 6 month shelf life. This means the product will remain workable and to the highest quality 6 months after the manufacture date.

Coverage

A 25kg bag of a good quality bedding mortar should provide 1m2 of coverage at 12.5mm thick.

Rapid setting mortar should not be used in layer thicknesses of greater than 75mm.

Working Time

When working with repaid setting mortar, its important to remember that due to the high content of cement within the mix, the period in which the product remains workable after adding water can be quite small.

MBM 30 will remain workable for 10 minutes before setting

MBM 60 will remain workable for 15 minutes before setting

MBM 90 will remain workable for 15 minutes before setting

MBM 104 will remain workable for 20 minutes before setting

PY104 is the equivalent product to MBM104 which are both BBA HAPAS approved, providing high compressive, flexural and tensile strengths.

Tarmac Building Products

Ultibed Mortar 45 is the most rapid setting mortar within the Ultibed range, reaching 20Mpa within 45 minutes.

Ultibed Mortar 60 is the equivalent product to MBM60 which also achieves 20MPa within 60 minutes.

Ultibed Mortar 90 is the equivalent product to MBM90 which also achieves 20MPa within 90 minutes.

Ultibed PR is the equivalent product to MBM104 however is not BBA HAPAS approved.

Parex

Highway CA45 mortar from Parex is similar to MBM45.

Highway C2 mortar from Parex is similar to MBM90.
